Russia opens further criminal proceedings against brother Oleg

    -

Another criminal case has been opened against Oleg Navalny in Russia. Alexei Navalny's brother was targeted by the Russian authorities years ago.

According to state information, Russia has opened a new criminal case against the brother of the recently deceased Kremlin opponent Alexei Navalny. The Russian state news agency Tass did not initially report what exactly Oleg Navalny was accused of. But the police are already looking for him.

Oleg Navalny is already on the Kremlin's wanted list. In February 2022 he was sentenced in absentia to a prison camp because he flew to Cyprus while serving a suspended sentence. Russian authorities said he had violated the terms of his probation. The 38-year-old was sentenced to a one-year suspended sentence in 2021 during the Corona pandemic along with his brother's important colleagues because he was said to have violated Corona requirements during protests against the Kremlin.

After his flight to Cyprus, the authorities assumed that Oleg Navalny, like many of his brother's other allies, had gone into exile. They had previously classified Navalny and his colleagues as terrorists. Here you can read more about it.

Brother was targeted by the Kremlin ten years ago

Together with his late brother Alexei Navalny, he had already been targeted by the Russian authorities in 2014 and was convicted in a fraud trial. At the time, opponents of the Kremlin criticized it as politically motivated. Navalny's brother then served a three and a half year prison sentence and was released in 2018, while Alexei Navalny received a three and a half year suspended sentence. After his poisoning in 2020, he returned to Russia in 2021 and was sentenced to more than 30 years in a camp in several trials.

After many days in repeated solitary confinement, Navalny collapsed on Friday in freezing temperatures during a walk in the prison camp in the polar region, according to Russian authorities. According to the prison service, attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful. However, this information cannot be independently verified. Navalny's supporters accuse the Kremlin of killing Navalny. They see the fact that the Russian authorities delayed the release of Navalny's body as an attempt at a cover-up. Here you can read more about it.
