Many men are in the army, and companies in Ukraine are desperately looking for staff. And so more and more Ukrainian women are working in jobs that until recently were considered too strenuous or dangerous for women.
What Tetyana Chernisheva misses most is working at lofty heights. Before Russia decided to go to war against Ukraine, Chernisheva lived in Luhansk in eastern Ukraine – and drove all over the country to set up or repair construction cranes, often dozens of meters high. “It’s wonderful to come to another city and see them at work from above,” Chernisheva enthuses. “I love the heights – it took me a long time to get used to working on the ground.”
