Three Israelis and two European Jews meet for a Sunday roast at the Spaniards Inn in London's Hampstead. Those who live in London are amused by the confusion that befell them during the last British census. One of the categories was “ethnicity”. Should they tick “white British”, “white other” or “mixed”? As the evening progresses, the exchange becomes more intimate but also more thoughtful. One says he no longer uses the word “Israel” in public because he fears the reaction. Instead, he gives his country of birth as “Fiji”. Another talks about a dilemma: he is teaching his sons Hebrew and has also passed on to them his love of an Israeli football team, but is this legacy too heavy for them? Does he even want to pass it on? For now, he says, but what will it look like in ten to twenty years? What kind of place will Israel be then? Will it even exist as a country?
