The brutal attack on the SPD European candidate Matthias Ecke in Dresden is just one of several attacks on election campaigners and officials before the votes in the European Parliament and in some municipalities in East Germany. A week ago, members of the Greens and the Volt party were attacked in Chemnitz, Leipzig and Zwickau. Protecting election campaigners cannot only be the job of the security authorities, says Saxony's Interior Minister Armin Schuster from the CDU.
