The future president is putting pressure on his own people to abandon the budget compromise with the Democrats. He is supported by his helper Elon Musk. But there is hardly enough time for a new budget law.
Things were actually looking pretty good for this interim budget. Democrats and Republicans had already agreed on a compromise in tough discussions in Congress. Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, took the lead in negotiating and supporting this 1,500-page legal text in order to prevent a so-called shutdown of US government business over the holidays. Johnson apparently thought he had already reached his goal. But then it became clear who actually has something to say in the USA these days: Elon Musk.
