Should Kardinal-Faulhaber-Strasse in Munich be renamed? Because of this and the anti-Jewish attitude of many Catholic dignitaries, a dispute has broken out that extends far beyond Bavaria.
When Kardinal-Faulhaber-Strasse was still called Promenadengasse, the founder of the Free State of Bavaria was murdered here. The 20-year-old right-wing extremist Anton von Arco shot Prime Minister Kurt Eisner in an ambush here on February 21, 1919. What an irony in history that the first place to commemorate Eisner – a floor slab with the contours of the murdered man – is now located on the very street that has been named after his arch-enemy since 1952. The former Bavarian Prime Minister would certainly have liked to have a say in the heated debate about the renaming of Kardinal-Faulhaber-Strasse.
