State elections in Brandenburg 2024: Polls show AfD ahead – Politics

    -

On September 22, the citizens of Brandenburg will elect a new state parliament in 44 constituencies. The new plenum will comprise 88 representatives, plus any overhang and compensatory mandates.

The more than two million eligible voters in Brandenburg probably have more than 15 parties to choose from. Polling stations will be open on Sunday, September 22nd from 8am to 6pmAnyone who is unable to vote on election day can cast their vote in advance by postal vote.

The AfD is in first place in the polls. At the beginning of the year, the party achieved more than 30 percent. Recently, however, the trend has been downward, and the gap to the other parties has shrunk. Behind the AfD, things are getting much tighter: the SPD, CDU and BSW are closing in on each other. Which party actually ends up in second place will probably only become clear on election day.

The trend is clear, however: the SPD has lost a lot of ground since the last election; in 2019 it was the strongest party with 26.2 percent. Newcomer BSW, on the other hand, is steadily gaining ground; within a very short time the party has reached around 15 percent in the polls. According to the latest polls, the Greens and especially the Left Party have to worry about entering the state parliament. The FDP would probably not make it into the new state parliament at the moment.

Polls cannot show exactly what the outcome will be, they can only capture a current mood. Since only about 1,000 people are interviewed for individual polls, the results are also subject to uncertainty. To give a better picture of the percentage range in which the parties could realistically end up, the South German Newspaper a poll corridor from the latest polls.

The Brandenburg election is taking place under these circumstances

A coalition of the SPD, CDU and Greens under the leadership of Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) currently governs Brandenburg. In 2019, the AfD became the second strongest force in Brandenburg, while many of the other parties recorded significant losses.

The first test of the mood this year was the European elections on June 9th. Here, the AfD became the strongest force in most districts in Brandenburg, followed by the CDU. For the BSW, it was a successful first election: in several districts, the young party achieved double-digit percentage results straight away.
