It is the ex-president's first appearance since the attempted attack on his golf course – and Trump is using the incident to tout his political plans.
In his first campaign appearance since the alleged attempted assassination attempt on his life, Republican US presidential candidate Donald Trump linked the incident to his political plans. After discussing his call for 200 percent tariffs on cars imported from Mexico at the event in Flint, Michigan, he said on Tuesday (local time): “And then you wonder why I'm being shot at, right? Only Consistent presidents are shot at.”
On Sunday, the Secret Service shot an armed man at Trump's golf course in Florida who was hiding in the bushes while the ex-president was playing there. The suspect himself did not fire a bullet and fled, but was arrested and charged a short time later. There was an attack on Trump in the state of Pennsylvania two months ago. He was slightly injured.
The Secret Service had done a “damn good job,” Trump said in Michigan, but also called for more staff for the agency responsible for protecting high-ranking politicians. About phone calls with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, he said both were “very nice”: “In a way I wish the call hadn't been made.” Trump had previously blamed Biden and Harris for the incident.
On November 5th, Trump and Harris will compete against each other in the presidential election.
