Lufthansa fears an escalation in the Middle East – and is therefore canceling connections. The airspace should be flown around.
Deutsche Lufthansa has suspended all flights to and from Tel Aviv and to and from Tehran with immediate effect. The reason for this was the short-term change in the security situation, the airline said. The flights are to remain suspended until September 19th.
Israeli and Iranian airspace would also be flown around by all Lufthansa Group airlines during this period. Lufthansa is continuing to monitor the situation closely and will continue to assess the situation in the coming days. Affected passengers can rebook to a later travel date free of charge or alternatively receive a full refund of the ticket price.
The airline apparently fears a further escalation of the Middle East conflict after nine people were killed and nearly 2,800 others injured in mass pager explosions in Lebanon on Tuesday. Hezbollah blamed Israel for the attack, but there was initially no statement from Israel.

Hezbollah had instructed its members to avoid cell phones and instead rely on its own telecommunications system to prevent Israeli attacks. Pagers enable, among other things, the reception of messages via their own radio frequency and therefore without the use of mobile networks.
Sources close to Hezbollah said that “the exploded pagers involved a shipment of a thousand devices recently imported by Hezbollah.” These appear to have been “hacked at the source”.
