WIf you set out to become the first African-American woman president of the United States of America, you probably have an idea of what you're getting yourself into. After waving to the cheering crowd and announcing her candidacy, Shirley Chisholm said: “I am not the candidate of black America, although I am black and proud of it. Nor am I the candidate of the women's movement, although I am a woman and just as proud of it. I am the candidate of the American people.” If you weren't there in 1972, you probably have no idea of the euphoria she unleashed.
