China exposes British MI6 spies in government

    -

In May, Britain brought three men to justice who were alleged to have spied for Hong Kong's secret service. Now China is uncovering a case with links to MI6.

China's state security agency says it has uncovered two spies from the British foreign intelligence service MI6. A Chinese couple who worked in central government facilities in Beijing were uncovered, the state security agency announced on Monday. According to the report, the man in question studied in Great Britain in 2015 through an exchange program and was recruited there by MI6.

During dinner invitations and excursions, disguised British intelligence agents got to know the man better and then offered him money in exchange for consulting work, it was said.

MI6 later revealed its identity, trained the man as a spy for a higher fee and sent him back to China. For a further fee, he also convinced his wife, who worked in an important department, to collect information there as well.

According to Chinese intelligence, the case is being investigated further. The statement did not say which agencies the couple worked for or when they were exposed. China's state security has significantly expanded its public relations work in recent months and is constantly warning about spies. The agency sometimes also makes espionage cases public.

In January, for example, the State Security Service had already published a case in which MI6 was allegedly involved. In May, Great Britain charged three men who were alleged to have worked for the secret service of Hong Kong – the former British crown colony and now a Chinese special administrative region.
